Having excelled on both the soccer field and athletics track at a young age, Wandisile Simelane’s progression through the rugby ranks began with a scholarship to attend the esteemed Jeppe High School for Boys. Wandisile’s initial selection for the Golden Lions at the U13 Craven Week established a pattern, whereby he continued to represent the province at the U16 Grant Khomo Week of 2014, followed by two years spent in the number thirteen jersey at the U18 Craven Week. Selection for the South African U18 Schools team in 2015 and 2016 cemented Simelane’s reputation as the form midfielder in the country, leading to an U19 Currie Cup debut whilst still a schoolboy.
Heralded as a creative outside centre destined for international honours, Simelane showed a full skillset when making his South African U20 debut on the wing against France; displaying intense raw speed and an ability to step off both feet before outstripping opponents. He repeated the feat again in the 2018 iteration of the World Rugby U20 Championship, but within a year, a 20-year-old Simelane’s Super Rugby debut showed that his ability to marshal defences and offload in contact was tailor made for the modern centre. Already an established senior starter, he holds the x-factor needed to break open a tight fixture.
