Wandile Mjekevu

Wandile Mjekevu
Biography

A former student of King Edward VII School in Johannesburg, Wandile Mjekevu first represented his province at the U16 Grant Khomo Week, repeating the feat at the U18 Craven Week the following year. By the age of 17, Mjekevu was already turning out for the Golden Lions in the U19 Craven Week and a Super Rugby debut followed just a few weeks after his 19th birthday. His second Super Rugby cap solidified his reputation as a superb finisher, as the young winger scored a hattrick against the Chiefs. Turning out for his country at the World Rugby U20 Championships of both 2010 and 2011, Wandile went on to sign with the Natal Sharks in 2012, where his ability to beat opponents on the outside saw Mjekevu don the number 13 jersey regularly.

An intelligent midfielder who can marshal defences with ease, it was his blistering pace that caught the eye of French Top 14 club, Perpignan. Alternating between the left and right wing, Wandile enjoyed an incredible strike rate of ten tries in 18 starts in 2014/15, leading the Southern Kings to aggressively recruit Mjekevu ahead of their Super Rugby campaign of the following season. Two years in the Eastern Cape led to widespread acclaim and when European giants Toulouse were seeking a pedigreed finisher, they turned to the man with over 100 professional appearances.
