Born and bred in the Boland, Valentino Wellman was first introduced to the game of rugby when watching his father earn a reputation of a local club player of considerable quality. Remaining in the province, Wellman turned out for the Boland Cavaliers in the U19 Currie Cup of 2013, immediately making his mark as a finisher with a stunning strike rate. Five touchdowns in sevens fixtures set him apart from other players of his age, but it was in 2014 that Valentino truly drew national acclaim. Stepping up to the U21 Currie Cup, he crossed the whitewash four times in a single hour of play, earning himself a brace in the fixture on the following weekend.
Eight tries in the competition drew the attention of Western Province and Wellman duly made his senior professional debut in the 2017 Supersport Rugby Challenge. Once again proving to be a deadly finisher, he scored three tries in four fixtures, before once again returning home to the Boland. Blessed with powerful leg drive, he thrived on the senior stage and amassed 23 tries in 37 appearances, the most pertinent of which was a last-minute effort against WP that saw Valentino beat countless defenders within a five-metre channel and show a clean pair of heels to his former teammates. Experienced and in the prime of his career, Wellman brings tremendous value to any squad.
