Having first caught the eye of the Golden Lions whilst representing UWC in the Varsity Shield, Uzair Cassiem made his senior professional debut in the 2012 Vodacom Cup, before spending a season at the crosstown Valke. His tenacity in tough surroundings was soon noticed by the Pumas, and Uzair established himself as a standout performer in the Currie Cup for four seasons. Set to join Griquas, Cassiem was so impressive in the Cheetahs Super Rugby pre-season camp that they bought Uzair out of his Griquas contract, allowing him to flourish at the highest level.
Showing his versatility as both a blindside and openside flanker, Cassiem enjoyed fourteen starts in fifteen Super Rugby fixtures, culminating in him scoring a try in his international test debut against Wales in 2016. Cassiem’s hardnosed ball-carrying saw him wear the Springbok No. 8 jersey throughout the 2017 Rugby Championship, a position that he maintained in the Cheetahs maiden Guinness Pro 14 campaign. Seeking a fresh challenge, Uzair signed with the Scarlets in 2018 and immediately emerged as a crowd favourite. Effortlessly adapted to a new playing style and challenging weather conditions, he emerged as a leader who routinely earns the hard yards by putting his body on the line. Cassiem is approaching the best years of his career, with so much more to come.
