Born and raised in Durban, Tijde Visser first turned out for the Natal Sharks at the tender age of 11, with his maiden appearance at the U13 Craven Week of 2008. He repeated the feat in 2009 and decided to enroll at a renowned producer of professional rugby players, Kearsney College. Visser’s technical maturity at the set piece impressed coaches to such an extent that he once again represented the Natal Sharks at back-to-back tournaments, this time the U18 Academy Week & U18 Craven Week. Tijde’s slick handling and pace were perfected suited to the Golden Lions game plan, and he signed with the Johannesburg-based union after completing his schooling.
Strong displays in the U19 and U21 Currie Cups drew the admiration of pundits, but it was his crucial role in Wits University’s promotion from the Varsity Shield to Varsity Cup that drew national attention. So much more than just a dominant front ranker, Visser’s intelligence has translated to strong academic results, and he furthered his studies at the University of East London in the UK, where his BSc Sports & Exercise Science degree resulted in a Student of the Year award. Selected for the Essex County Rugby XV, Visser returned to South Africa in 2020 and took up an opportunity with Griquas in the Currie Cup, thriving whilst scrummaging against some of the world’s best.
