Tiaan van Wyk

Tiaan van Wyk
Biography

Having emerged from the Eastern Cape, Tiaan van Wyk first made his mark at a provincial level in the colours of Eastern Province, during the U13 Craven Week. Rather than continuing his career trajectory as a proverbial big fish in a small pond, van Wyk decided to challenge himself by enrolling at one of South Africa’s most esteemed rugby schools, Grey College in Bloemfontein. Known to have some of the greatest depth in the country’s age-group system, Tiaan staked a claim as one of the most talented athletes of his year and was duly selected for the Free State Cheetahs U16 High Performance Squad.

Although able to slot in at flyhalf or fullback, it is as a game-breaking scrumhalf that van Wyk has made the greatest impact, in both Sevens and fifteens. Blessed with an innate sense of when to change the pace of the game or shift the point of attack to expose defensive frailties, Tiaan’s considerable power in close contact means that he keeps loose forwards guessing through intelligent running lines and devastating snipes around the fringes. Perhaps the most refined aspect to van Wyk’s game is his educated boot, not only as a prodigious goalkicker, but also through his well-timed clearances that pin opponents back, deep in their own territory. With a maturity beyond his years and skills to match, Tiaan van Wyk is a name to remember.
