A former student of the esteemed Maritzburg College, Stefan Ungerer represented the Natal Sharks in every age-group team since he was 13 years old. So technically advanced was Ungerer that he played in the U19 Currie Cup for three consecutive seasons (two of them whilst still a schoolboy), before making his senior professional debut in the 2013 Vodacom Cup as a teenager. It came as no surprise when Stefan turned out for his country at the World Rugby U20 Championship later that year, where his combination with both Handre Pollard and Robert du Preez drew the admiration of pundits and coaches.
A Super Rugby debut followed in 2014 and Ungerer soon began to draw comparisons with a young Fourie du Preez, as he marshalled play with an ability to manipulate defences with ease. The accuracy of Ungerer’s kicking game has always been a strength, but it was his composure with ball in hand that led a young Southern Kings team to draft Stefan into their Super Rugby squad in 2017. Two seasons at the Pumas saw Ungerer establish his reputation as one of the standout halfbacks in South Africa, convincing the Kings to aggressively recruit the powerfully built number nine ahead of their 2018/19 Guinness Pro 14 campaign.
