Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, Scott Mathie attended Durban High School (DHS), before turning out for the Sharks at the U18 Craven Week. He formed part of a Currie Cup winning Blue Bulls squad, before returning to Durban and once again lifting the historic trophy with the Natal Sharks and making a name for himself in Super Rugby. The British-Passport holder enjoyed stints at both the Leeds Tykes and Sale Sharks, culminating in a playing swansong at the EP Kings. It was here that Mathie’s coaching career took flight, assisting Eastern Province U19 as a specialist Skills Coach, before returning to his alma mata and transforming DHS from a struggling outfit to one of the premier schoolboy rugby programmes in the country.
As Director of Rugby, he oversaw the progression of numerous Sharks players who now find themselves on the professional stage, and Mathie himself earned a callup as Head Coach of the Natal Sharks U18 Academy Week team. Young, ambitious and with a reputation for superb man-management, Scott joined Griquas in 2019 as an Assistant Coach, where his backline and skills specialties helped turn the underachieving union into Supersport Challenge champions and Currie Cup semi-finalists. He took up the reigns of Head Coach later in the year, entrusted to lead the ambitious province at just 36 years of age.
