Ruben Liebenberg

Ruben Liebenberg
Biography

A product of Goudveld Hoërskool in the Northern Free State, Ruben Liebenberg first represented his province as a 16-year-old at the Grant Khomo Week of 2016. Liebenberg was a prominent fixture for his school 1st XV, where he seamlessly transitioned between flyhalf and centre. Ruben’s superb acceleration off the mark came to the fore in the Sevens format, but it was at the U18 Craven Week of 2018 that he rose to national prominence. Aside from his cool goalkicking under pressure, Liebenberg earned a reputation for intelligent lateral running lines that proved a nightmare for opposition defensive structures.

A willingness to take the ball flat to the line draws the attention of numerous opponents, and with Liebenberg’s sizeable frame, he also physically dominates the collision when taking contact. It came as no surprise when the Blue Bulls signed Ruben to a junior provincial contract in 2019, and he took to the intensity of the U19 Currie Cup with ease. Always looking to carry the ball in both hands, this pedigreed pivot has earned a reputation for a ‘bullet’ flat pass that identifies outside backs & leads to numerous tries scored in the corner. Gifted, humble and always willing to learn, Ruben Liebenberg is an asset to any squad.
