Regan van der Westhuizen
A product of the Western Cape, Regan van der Westhuizen first showed his pedigree in primary school, where he captained Western Province in both Sevens, and at the U13 Craven Week. With the choice of numerous high schools available to him, Regan enrolled at one of the leading rugby institutions in the country, Paul Roos Gymnasium. Van der Westhuizen thrived in the intensity and depth of Paul Roos, earning a call-up to the Western Province U16 Elite Squad, and making the outside centre berth his own. Regan once again showed his leadership credentials by captaining his school to the National Schools Sevens Championship, and his raw pace saw Regan turn out for the 1st XV as a barnstorming winger, able to break tackles at will.
It was at the U18 Academy Week of 2018 when the mature game-breaker caught national attention, using a ‘route one’ running style to dominate the advantage line at will. So much more than just a bulldozing runner, van der Westhuizen’s ability to marshal his own defensive line and produce a well-timed offload has set him apart from other players his age. Physically imposing and not one to take a backward step, his penchant for putting in bone-crushing defensive hits saw a teenage Regan emerge from school to the senior ranks, where he immediately slotted into the Helderberg RC 1st XV.
