Neil Bester

Neil Bester
Biography

A former student of the esteemed Paarl Gymnasium, Neil Bester completed his schooling in 2011 and first arrived in France ahead of the 2013/14 season. The youngster joined the (then) Fédérale 1 outfit, CA Périgueux Dordogne, where he impressed to such an extent that Pro D2’s Stade Aurillacois aggressively recruited the midfielder to join their ranks, including a senior professional debut against Bourgoin. Seeking a fresh opportunity for consistent game time, Bester moved on to RC Aubenas Vals and immediately showed his versatility by starting in the number 10, 12 and 13 jerseys.

Incredibly well-conditioned and dominant through the collision, Neil’s acceleration off the mark also led to many a try coming through beating opponents for pace on their outside shoulder. Comfortable dictating play as a pivot, Bester’s distribution is a strength of his game, as is a goal-kicking ability that saw him amass 141 points in Fédérale 1. Stints at Limoges and CA Lannemezan established Neil as a midfielder who can play the role of both a second flyhalf playmaker, as well as an attacking threat, all whilst drawing the attention of numerous defenders. Experienced, calm under pressure and blessed with a low centre of gravity, Neil Bester is a devastating defender who is only starting to reach his peak of his powers and is destined for greater things.
