Mihlali Mgolodela

Mihlali Mgolodela
Biography

Having first represented Western Province at U12 level, Mihlali Mgolodela is a rugby player blessed with the pedigree that few can match. After repeating the feat at the U13 Craven Week, Mihlali decided to enrol at the prestigious Rondebosch Boys High School, where he immediately earned the proverbial captain’s armband. The mature young man initially found a place in the second row, but coaches soon realised that his speed and mobility would be better suited to the role of a marauding loose forward. Once again drafted into the Western Province High Performance Squad at U15 level, he duly turned out for WP at the U16 Grant Khomo Week of 2016.

Aside from his numerous plaudits as an adolescent, it was in 2017 that Mgolodela truly drew national attention. His performances at the U18 Academy Week were that of a ‘man amongst boys’, necessitating selection for the South African U17 High Performance Squad and making his capping for South African U18 Schools a foregone conclusion in 2018. Deciding to remain at Newlands in 2019, Mihlali turned out in the U19 Currie Cup, where his pillaging ability, destructive ball-carrying and bone-crushing defensive hits suggested that he has all the hallmarks of a modern-day back rower.
