Matthew Bauer

Matthew Bauer
Biography

Hailing from Durban’s celebrated rugby institution, Glenwood High School, Matthew Bauer first made a name for himself by representing the Natal Sharks at the U18 Academy Week of 2015. Bauer was renowned for his work rate, determination, and refusal to be brought to ground. His performances caught the eye of the EP Kings Academy, whose gutsy approach and humble club spirit were the perfect match for the ambitious teenager.

It was in the Varsity Cup Young Guns U20 tournament that Bauer showed his versatility by shifting to the back row, leading to selection for Eastern Province in the U19 Currie Cup, and a rapid progression to the senior ranks. Matthew’s ability to step up against seasoned campaigners in the Supersport Rugby Challenge placed him firmly in the sights of foreign clubs and he summarily signed with Fédérale 2 club US Orthézienne ahead of the 2018/19 season. Still only 21 years old and willing to run through a brick wall for his teammates, this lineout option looks set to progress through the ranks and continue to use his considerable pace to outwit would-be defenders.
