Having grown up in Limpopo, Kobus Marais first represented the Limpopo Bulls at the U13 Craven Week, repeating the feat at U16 and U18 Craven Week level. The impressive young pivot decided to move to move to Hoerskool Waterkloof in Pretoria and duly signed a junior provincial contract with the Blue Bulls. Marais was a revelation at Loftus Versveld, earning a senior professional debut in the 2013 Vodacom Cup at just 19 years of age, before he had even turned out in the U19 Currie Cup. Kobus went on to join the dominant Bulls in both the U19 and U21 Currie Cups later that year, becoming the top points scorer in the U19 competition.
Once again, Marais’ exceptionally accurate boot made him the top points scorer in the U21 Currie Cup of the following year, leading Eastern Province to request a loan for the junior superstar, this time in the senior Currie Cup. The exposure turned out to be a masterstroke, as the ambitious Mpumalanga Pumas offered Marais an opportunity to establish himself as a Currie Cup starter, making the number 10 jersey his own. Scoring over 200 points in 27 games, Kobus’ sizeable frame meant that he was equally dangerous with ball-in-hand; willing to attack the gain line and relishing his defensive duties. Always willing to embrace a challenge, he joined Strela-Agro Kazan in the Russian Championship in 2021.
