Born and raised in Swellendam in the Boland, Joe Jonas’ considerable skillset was clear from a very young age. Along with his older brother Curtis, Joe received a scholarship to attend one of the leading rugby institutions in South Africa, Glenwood High School. Renowned for its considerable player depth, its unheard of for a 16-year-old to play for the school’s 1st XV, but that is exactly what the game-changing utility back did at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival. It came as no surprise when he later turned out for the Natal Sharks at the U16 Grant Khomo Week, going on to repeat the feat at both the U18 Academy Week and the U18 Craven Week in consecutive years.
What sets Jonas apart is not only his consistency and calm demeanour under pressure, but also the ability to step up and perform at a provincial level in several positions. He marshalled play as a starting flyhalf for the Sharks at the Academy Week, before showing his considerable raw pace as a winger in the 2018 Craven Week. Joe’s low centre of gravity and powerful leg-drive saw him don the number 13 jersey for his school 1st XV, but the consensus amongst pundits and onlookers is that his devastating counterattack and tactical maturity is best suited to the backfield as a fullback who not only gains valuable yardage with his boot, but also makes line-breaks look easy.
