Born in Johannesburg, Janus Venter grew up in Eastern Gauteng and stood out as a prodigious talent in his formative years. Turning out for his province at just 12-years-old, Venter once again earned selection the following year, in the colours of the Valke at the U13 Craven Week. Venter remained in the region for high school and enrolled at EG Jansen, an institution renowned for producing some of the most aggressive tight forwards in age-group rugby. A player of supreme pedigree, Janus was once again called up to the Valke team at the U16 Grant Khomo Week in 2015, repeating the feat at the U18 Academy Week of the following year.
Despite suffering an unfortunate injury in his final year of schooling, Venter’s destructive ball-carrying caught the eye of the Free State Cheetahs, who offered the barnstorming hooker a junior provincial contract, as well as a bursary to attend the Central University of Technology. Emerging as a starter in both the U19 and U21 Currie Cup competitions, his senior professional debut came in the 2019 Supersport Challenge, where he donned the number 2 jersey at just 19 years of age. It was in the Varsity Cup that Janus drew national acclaim though; scoring an incredible 12 tries in the nine fixtures of the 2021 season. A senior Currie Cup campaigner, he has all the attributes to reach the highest level.
