Jan-Louis la Grange
Born and raised in the Western Cape, Jan-Louis la Grange attended Paarl Boys High School, an institution renowned for its ability to produce professional rugby players. Initially overlooked by Western Province for age-group selection, la Grange’s superb game-breaking ability had caught the eye of the Golden Lions and he summarily signed a junior provincial contract with the Johannesburg-based union. Jan-Louis’ impact was immediate, culminating in his considerable contribution to the Gauteng-based union lifting the U19 Currie Cup of 2016. A player of immense physical strength, the youngster enjoyed a senior professional debut a few weeks after his 20th birthday and earned his first Currie Cup cap later that year.
With speed to burn and a swerve of the hips that left many a would-be defender grasping at thin air, la Grange was first utilized as a wing, before being shifted to the centre. His ability to marshal defences made him perfectly suited to the outside centre channel, but the Golden Lions also saw him as a number 12 who was equally adept at distributing, as he was straightening the line. His instinctive habit of carrying the ball in two hands leaves defences guessing, but its Jan-Louis’ deadly fend that makes him a truly destructive attacking threat. Having already earned a call-up to the Lions Super Rugby squad, he has superb pedigree.
