Gihard Visagie

Gihard Visagie
Biography

Born in South Africa, of Namibian descent, Gihard Visagie first earned provincial representation at the tender age of 12, before repeating the feat a year later at the U13 Craven Week of 2009. Visage went on to attend one of South Africa’s oldest schools, Helpmekaar Kollege in Johannesburg. Emerging as a standout talent, Gihard once again shone on the national stage by donning the number one jersey at the U18 Academy Week. Blessed with a technical scrummaging proficiency that matched his destructive ball-carrying, Visagie shifted to the tighthead in the following season and once again emerged as a leading light for the Golden Lions U18 squad.

Choosing to remain in Gauteng, Gihard enrolled at Wits University, where he began to carve a reputation for himself as a mobile hooker, and integral part of their Varsity Shield squad. Reverting to anchor the scrum for the Golden Lions U20 team, Visagie moved to the cross-town Valke to enjoy senior game time and a professional debut as a 20-year-old in the 2016 Currie Cup Qualifiers. Three further seasons in the Currie Cup 1st Division led to a need for a fresh challenge, and he moved to the ambitious Russian outfit, Strela-Agro Kazan. Experienced, physically imposing and with some of the best years ahead of him, Gihard Visagie is a player destined for higher honours.
