Gideon van der Merwe
Born and raised in Potchefstroom, Gideon van der Merwe attended the local Potchefstroom Gymnasium, before enrolling at North West University. Blessed with brutal natural strength and a low centre of gravity, Gideon established himself as one of the standouts back rowers in consecutive Varsity Cup campaigns. Rapidly quick to the breakdown, van der Merwe’s agility and physicality in defence made him the quintessential openside flank and ‘jackal’. A senior professional debut came in the colours of the Leopards, during the 2017 Supersport Rugby Challenge. Gideon quickly made the number six jersey his own, going on to dominate the Currie Cup 1st Division and catch the attention of the ambitious Griquas.
Far more than just an imposing ball-carrier, van der Merwe’s ability to execute offloads in close contact has been one of the reasons that he so effortlessly stepped up to the Currie Cup Premier Division and Super Rugby SA competitions. Aside from his superb leadership qualities, Gideon’s try-scoring feats of three touchdowns in four appearances became a hallmark of the 2020/21 Currie Cup season. Disciplined, hard-working and always looking to assist teammates, the 25-year-old is approaching the peak of his powers and possesses all the qualities that make South African back rowers so successful on the international stage.
