Born in Port Elizabeth, Garrick Mattheus attended an institution renowned for producing many a Springbok, Grey High School. After earning selection for Eastern Province at the U18 Academy Week, Mattheus was drafted into the EP Kings U19 Currie Cup squad, where he proved to be a prominent player, despite still being at school. The dominant pivot impressed with his willingness to take the ball flat and create space for his outside backs, whilst the strong winds synonymous with the city forced him to develop a robust kicking game. As a place kicker, his left-foot is one of the most dependable in the South African domestic landscape, which led to a senior professional debut at just 20 years of age.
By the end of the year, Mattheus had established himself as the starting flyhalf in the EP Kings 2016 Senior Currie Cup campaign, before Super Rugby squad selection followed in 2017. Equally adept at launching counterattacks from fullback, Garrick caught the attention of the Blue Bulls, forming part of a highly successful U21 Currie Cup team. Seeking a fresh senior opportunity, Mattheus signed with the Boland Kavaliers and received the team’s Backline Player of the Year award in his first Currie Cup season. Calm, influential and brave in defence, Garrick Mattheus is the type of x-factor playmaker who single-handedly turns the tide of a match.
