EWALD VAN DER WESTHUIZEN

EWALD VAN DER WESTHUIZEN
Biography

Born in KwaZulu-Natal, Ewald van der Westhuizen’s first taste of provincial selection came at the U18 Craven Week of 2008; representing the Griffons and going on to do the same in the U19 Currie Cup later that year. The immensely powerful scrummager moved to Johannesburg where he impressed for the Golden Lions in the U21 Currie Cup, before rising to national prominence in the Varsity Cup. He soon caught the attention of the ambitious Griquas team, who signed van der Westhuizen in time for their 2013 Currie Cup campaign.

Consistent displays by the young front ranker were duly rewarded when he was drafted by the Cheetahs for a Super Rugby debut in 2015, before returning to Kimberley as one of the most destructive tightheads in the country. Ewald continued to shine on the domestic stage, and when it became clear that he was suited to the rigours of the French game, he joined Aurillac on a short-term deal in 2018. Another loan spell at Enisey-STM solidified his reputation in Europe, all at an age when this tight forward is hitting the peak of his powers.
