Born and raised in Bloemfontein, EW Viljoen attended the prestigious Grey College and represented the Free State at both rugby and cricket. After finishing his schooling in 2013, Viljoen signed with Western Province and was immediately drafted into their 2014 Currie Cup squad, making his senior debut on the wing. A superb all-round athlete, EW’s outstanding displays for South Africa at the World Rugby U20 Championship was enough to convince the Stormers coaching staff that he belonged at the highest level.
The multitalented utility back thrived in the number 13 jersey during Super Rugby, whilst equally at home at inside centre for WP’s Currie Cup campaign. His seven tries in the colours of the DHL Stormers drew the attention of the Leicester Tigers, who announced the signing of Viljoen ahead of the 2019/20 season. Always willing to put the team ahead of himself, EW’s European Challenge Cup debut came at fullback against Pau before reverting to the midfield a week later against the Cardiff Blues. With time on his side, experience to his name and a versatility that is unmatched in the modern game, EW Viljoen is arguably one of the most valuable players in English domestic rugby.
