Eugene Hare

Educated at Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom, Eugene Hare first turned out at provincial level at the U16 Grant Khomo Week of 2011. Donning the colours of the Leopards, Hare’s quick service from the base caught the eye of numerous pundits, but he chose to remain in the province and attend the revered North West University. Despite the Leopards having some of the greatest age-group depth in the country, Eugene emerged as a standout halfback in both the U19 and U21 Currie Cup competitions, whilst also showing his devastating pace in provincial sevens competitions.
A senior professional debut duly followed, where the snipping scrumhalf showed superb versatility by starting on the wing in the Supersport Rugby Challenge. It was in the Varsity Cup that Hare truly earned national acclaim, becoming a vital cog in the intimidating NWU Pukke squad that made their Potchefstroom home ground such a fortress. International honours followed when Eugene was called up to the South African Students squad for prestigious sevens tours, but it is in the longer format where the qualified forensic accountant has truly thrived, through his wily game breaking ability. With his best years ahead of him, the experienced general continues to show off his outstanding distribution from the base in the Currie Cup.
