Deon Carstens

Deon Carstens
Biography

A former student of Boland Landbou, Deon Carstens plays with a steely resolve that one can expect from a product of the famed agricultural high school. Having represented Western Province at the U16 Grant Khomo Week of 2014, Carstens repeated the feat two years later at the U18 Craven Week. Blessed with a superb rugby brain, Deon was mentioned by numerous pundits as a halfback akin to legendary Springbok Fourie du Preez, especially when viewing his accurate box kick and physicality in contact. The vice-captain of his school 1st XV, the depth and strength of Carstens’ pass allowed his backline to play with considerable width; attributes that convinced Western Province to offer the stocky scrumhalf a junior provincial contract.

Forming part of WP’s U19 Currie Cup squad in 2017, Deon enrolled at Stellenbosch University and excelled in the Maties U20 Varsity Cup team in 2018. It came as no surprise when he earned a senior professional debut in the 2019 Supersport Challenge at just 21 years of age. Able to slot in at flyhalf when needed, Carstens formed part of the Stormers Super Rugby pre-season squad, before deciding to pursue more game time at the ambitious Currie Cup 1st Division team, the Boland Kavaliers. A special talent with incomparable pedigree, Deon Carstens will undoubtedly excel at a higher level.
