Born and raised in Harare, Deanne Makoni attended the prestigious Prince Edward School, where he turned out for the Presidential XV in Zimbabwean Craven Week trials in both 2014 and 2015. Joining the Old Georgians RFC in 2016, the imposing front ranker immediately staked his claim as one of the premier juniors in the country, enjoying a call up to the national U20 squad, where he initially anchored the scrum as a technically mature prop. By 2017, Deanne’s mobility and destructive ball-carrying made him better suited to the role of a modern-day hooker, and his accurate lineout throwing became a hallmark of his game.
Aside from his national exploits at age-group level, Makoni’s performances for Old Georgians in South Africa’s Gold Cup led to significant interest across the border, and he formed part of the Limpopo Blue Bulls junior Currie Cup structures. It was at the neighbouring Mpumalanga Pumas where he truly thrived though, forming part of their successful U20 Currie Cup campaign in 2018, showcasing his speed from the base by donning the No. 8 jersey. A move to the Free State Cheetahs followed, and he formed part of their Supersport Challenge and Currie Cup squad before the Covid-induced lockdown. With many years ahead of him, he now enjoys senior international exposure for Zimbabwe.
