A product of the prestigious St. Alban’s College in Pretoria, Cornel Korff’s maturity and leadership was clear for all to see, when he was elected Deputy Headboy of the school in 2017. By this time, he had already represented the Blue Bulls Club XV at numerous age-group levels, as well as being given the proverbial captain’s armband for the College’s 1st XV. Never one to shy away from the physical aspects of the game, the young flyhalf was renowned for taking the ball flat and brandishing a punishing fend to would-be defenders. A superbly balanced runner with a prodigious right boot, he has also been employed as a counter-attacking threat at fullback.
It came as no surprise when the Blue Bulls drafted Korff into their U19 Currie Cup squad, repeating the feat in the U21 Currie Cup of the following year. Ever the versatile athlete, he moved to Bloemfontein in 2020 and immediately made an impact for the Free State Cheetahs as a scrumhalf in the U21 Currie Cup. Sniping, offloading in contact and slotting more than 80% of his goal-kicks, even Covid-inflicted stoppages could not halt Cornel’s progression, as he enrolled at the University of the Free State. Turning out for the UFS Shimlas team in the 2021 Varsity Cup, Korff once again donned the number ten jumper and showed the form that suggested higher honours await.
