CORNEL SMIT

CORNEL SMIT
Biography

A product of the prestigious Bishops School in Cape Town, Cornel Smit first represented his province at the U18 Academy Week of 2014, before turning out at the Craven Week of the following year. So impressive was the hard-running centre that he earned selection for the SA Schools U18 Academy team, before signing a junior professional contract with Western Province. Physically imposing and intelligent, the multi-talented midfielder can play the roles of both a ‘second flyhalf’ creator, and a barnstorming route one bulldozer.

What sets Smit apart from his contemporaries is a turn of pace that leads to numerous half-breaks; and has also seen Cornel represent his province on the wing, when needed. As is the Bishops way, his superb handling has led coaches to place Smit at first receiver, making use of a prodigious boot that not only gains significant yardage, but also sees him land game-winning goal kicks in the Varsity Cup. A classically balanced runner who keeps defenders guessing, Cornel Smit is the type of comprehensive talent that comes once in a generation.
