Born in Pretoria and raised in the Western Cape, Conway Pretorius joined the esteemed Harmony Sports Academy after completing his schooling. He thrived in the professional setup and earned selection for the Griffons U19 Currie Cup squad, playing in every match of the season before returning home to join the Boland Kavaliers. Within a year, Pretorius had a senior professional debut under his belt in the Vodacom Cup, where the then 21-year-old made the Number 8 jersey his own. Scoring a hattrick of tries in a 15-minute spell, it came as no surprise that Griquas drafted Conway into their 2014 Currie Cup Qualification squad. Seeking a new challenge, Pretorius took his considerable frame to Italy, where he signed with Serie A outfit Perugia, before enjoying a sojourn in Scotland.
The well-travelled back rower enjoyed a dream spell in the famous hoops of Western Province, before once again finding his way to the ambitious Griquas. Blessed with the size of an enforcer, Pretorius has gained the most adulation for his considerable speed and ability to beat backline players for pace on the outside. Perfectly suited to the intensity of Global Rapid Rugby, Conway joined the Valke before the suspension of rugby due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The perfect link between forwards and backs, Pretorius’ is a man in the peak of his powers.
