Chris Smit

Chris Smit
Biography

A past pupil of the illustrious Paul Roos Gymnasium, Chris Smit decided to stay in the Western Cape after completing his schooling, enrolling at the historic Stellenbosch University. Despite not featuring for Western Province at age-group level, the determined Smit rapidly rose through the ranks at Maties, the world’s largest rugby club by player numbers. Renowned for his humility and big match temperament, Chris thrived in the pressure and intensity of the Varsity Cup and earned his provincial call-up to the Western Province senior squad during the 2016 Currie Cup Qualifiers.

A calming influence on players around him, the experienced inside centre has also brought his versatility, distribution and kicking game to the number ten jersey, steadying the Maties juggernaut that lifted back-to-back Varsity Cup titles in 2018 and 2019. Outstanding performances saw Smit awarded with the 2019 ‘Player that Rocks’ (Player of the Tournament) award, before furthering his professional career with the Griquas later that year. A single Currie Cup start was all it took to convince the Cheetahs that Chris was destined for higher honours, and the physical midfielder made his Guinness Pro 14 debut against the Ospreys in 2019.
