Carel du Preez
Born and raised in a small Northern Cape town, Carel du Preez attended Hoër Lanbouskool Noordkaapland and played for the 1st XV for an unprecedented four seasons. Having represented Griquas in the U18 Academy Week, the imposing youngster attended the Stellenbosch Rugby Academy to fine-tune every aspect of his game under the watchful eye of professional coaches. Despite still being in his teens, du Preez turned out for the Helderberg Rugby Club senior 1st XV and earned selection for the Western Province Amateur & Sevens teams in 2012. A 20-year-old Carel then made his senior professional debut in the Vodacom Cup, showing a destructive ball-carrying streak and forming part of a title-winning squad in the U21 Currie Cup of 2013.
With coaching staff looking to get the ball in du Preez’s hands at every opportunity, he donned the No. 8 jersey in 2014 and stood out as a mobile link between forwards and backs, whilst also showing his wares as a second row in the Vodacom Cup. It came as no surprise when the South African Sevens squad took notice and Carel duly joined the SA Sevens Academy later that year. Numerous HSBC Sevens Series outings showed his athleticism on the world stage, but a return to the Currie Cup meant that he added his considerable frame and experience to the ambitious Mpumalanga Pumas.
