Born and raised in Greytown, Bayanda Ngubane first represented his province before even reaching his teens. A natural in the shorter format of the game, Ngubane excelled for the Natal Sharks U13 Sevens team, earning a scholarship to the esteemed Maritzburg College and cementing his place as one of the standouts of his generation. Bayanda thrived in the intensity and physicality of his school’s abrasive playing style, going toe-to-toe with some of the biggest schoolboys in the country and putting in dominant displays. He once again featured in the Sevens setup of the Sharks, this time turning out in the U18 High Performance Squad, where his raw pace and superb sidestep left defenders grasping at air.
Ngubane made the decision to move closer to Durban by transferring to Westville Boys High School, where he enjoyed the benefits of playing under the tutelage of former Springbok centre, Waylon Murray. Much like his mentor, Bayanda is blessed with powerful leg drive and the rare ability to beat an opponent on his outside, given the smallest of openings. Already a prolific try-scorer, its his innate ability to read the game and find himself in the ‘right place at the right time’ that has led pundits to tip Ngubane for higher honours.
