Vlok Cilliers leaves WP to start new venture

Cape Town – Vlok Cilliers’ tenure as Western Province’s kicking coach has come to an end.

Cilliers, 49, has been Western Province’s kicking coach since 2014 and finishes his stint having won two Currie Cup titles with the union.

He told Netwerk24 that the time was right to move on and start his own kicking school.

The kicking school will be based in Cape Town and Cilliers will work alongside former WP utility back Joe Pietersen.

Four schools have already opted to join forces with the kicking school, while two Japanese clubs will make use of Cilliers’ services on a consultancy basis.

“I’ve been a kicking coach for 17 years – first at the Blue Bulls and then WP. There was always a desire to start a kicking school and do consultancy work. The kicking school, with its base in Cape Town, opens on February 1 next year.”

Cilliers played 80 matches for Western Province, as a utility back, between 1993 and 1998.

He represented the SA Sevens team in 1993 and 1994, having captained the WP Sevens team for three years during a five-year period of playing for the team (1994-98).

Cilliers played one Test for the Springboks in 1996 and also represented the SA Barbarians team – at XVs and seven-a-side level.
